Biography
Veteran Wests forward, originally from Portland, later joined the Eels in 1974. A resolute defender and on-field leader, Baker w+C1561on a premiership with the club's reserve grade in 1975. The following year he took on the role of reserve grade coach but after making a comeback as a player, he was a reserve forward in the Eels' maiden grand final appearance. Baker was a prop in both the historic draw and replay against St George in 1977 but retired in 1979 to continue his career as a coach.

John was one of the last old school forwards to play rugby league. Loved his time at Parra. I remember when he joined the club - he said that all he wanted was a place in the top side and a bit of respect and he got both at Parra. Hard as nails.
