Biography
Former champion runner, rated the fastest man in the code's inaugural season, Horrie Miller served as the NSWRL's secretary for 32 years until his controversial sacking in 1946. Miller scored two tries for Easts in the club's 14-12 loss to Souths in the first premiership final and was both the top try-scorer (15t) and point-scorer (15t, 2g - 47pts) in the 1908 season. Easts' first secretary while still a player, he retired at the end of 1909 to take on the role full-time. In 1914 he succeeded Ted Larkin as secretary of the NSWRL following Larkin's enlistment for war duty (Larkin was subsequently killed at Gallipoli). Miller later coined the phrase 'The Greatest Game of All' in describing the game he loved. In February 1946 he was sacked from his dual role (he was also secretary of the Australian Board of Control) when a modest £80 amount could not be accounted for. It was a sad demise for one of the pioneers of the code. He later died in 1967, aged 85.
